Employee benefits provider Workplace Options is offering upon-request packets to both employers and employees containing tips and information for enjoying next month's World Cup while still maintaining an effective and efficient workplace.

The tips include:

  • reiterating company policy on time away from work, and encouraging employees who are able to take holiday time to do so and enjoy the festivities;
  • acknowledging the excitement surrounding the event by offering team building activities;
  • creating a reward system that celebrates the event;
  • offering flexible work hours so that employees may be able to participate in extracurricular activities, without having to use personal time off;
  • engaging workers through fun experiences such as creating a charity sweepstake to guess the final outcome of the games, or letting them wear team shirts on match days.

Dean Debnam, chief executive officer of Workplace Options, said: "Through our research we have learned the importance of employee engagement, workplace flexibility and the value of a healthy work-life balance. While corporate goals mandate productivity in the workplace, the impact of outside engagements cannot be discounted when it comes to managing employees."

Alan King, president and chief operating officer at Workplace Options, added: "Maintaining an open dialogue with employees is the key here. If you are able to set clear expectations and communicate what is and is not appropriate during a time such as the World Cup, hopefully it will be easier to manage workflow and keep the peace with colleagues at the same time."
