Issue

Adrian called to talk to us as both he and his wife were approaching retirement but didn’t feel that they were prepared. They both led active lives, but he was concerned about how they would fill their time once they stopped working.

Solution

Adrian and one of our counsellors discussed how he and his wife felt about approaching retirement. They talked about new leisure activities and the opportunities for learning that might be of interest to them. Adrian was interested in voluntary work, so the counsellor put him in touch with a local volunteer bureau and an organisation that placed retired executives with charities. The counsellor also found a pre-retirement course in his area that Adrian and his wife could attend at the weekends.

Outcome

The following month, both Adrian and his wife started attending the pre-retirement course. After retiring, Adrian applied for a job managing the finances of a local charity. He also started an evening course in French so he would be able to travel to France and indulge in his hobby of wine tasting. His wife successfully applied to join the Citizens Advice Bureaux and is presently training to become a Specialist Debt Advisor.
